Troubleshooting OBS Studio Screen Recording Issues on Fedora 41

Someone told me that their OBS Studio suddenly closed when they started screen recording. They are using Fedora 41 with the KDE Plasma Desktop Environment.

Here is my response:

These are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Solution 1

  1. Update OBS Studio and Your System: Make sure you are using the latest version of OBS Studio and have updated your Fedora system. Updates often fix bugs and improve compatibility.
  2. Install the x264 Plugin for OBS Studio: Some users have reported that installing the obs-studio-plugin-x264 package from the RPM Fusion repository can help resolve this issue. To install it, open a terminal and run the following command:

sudo dnf install obs-studio-plugin-x264

After installation, open OBS Studio and set the encoder to x264 in the recording settings.

Solution 2

If you use sudo dnf install obs-studio in previous, you can remove it using the command:

sudo dnf remove obs-studio

Now use the Flatpak Version of OBS Studio: Some users have found that the Flatpak version of OBS Studio is more stable. To install it, ensure that you have enabled Flatpak support, then run the following command:

flatpak install flathub com.obsproject.Studio

After installation, run OBS Studio with the command:

flatpak run com.obsproject.Studio

Notes

Check PipeWire Integration: OBS Studio uses PipeWire for screen capture on Wayland. Make sure PipeWire is installed and functioning correctly on your system. If you are experiencing issues with PipeWire integration, consider reinstalling or updating PipeWire.

Consider Using X11: If the issue persists on Wayland, you can try logging in using an X11 session and see if the problem persists. Some users have reported better stability with X11.
